The genre of botanical art has been growing steadily in recent decades. What is it? What are its history and conventions? Who does it? Why do they do it? Is it relevant? Emmons will discuss all this and more.

Recently, Emmons won the Gold Medal at the New York Botanical Garden’s “Curious Allies: Mutualism in Fungi, Parasites, and Carnivores Exhibition” with the American Society of Botanical Artists. Other major awards Emmons has received include two Gold Medals and “Best Painting of Show” from the Royal Horticultural Society, London and “Best in Show” at the American Society of Botanical Artists 21st International Exhibition, New York and the American Society of Botanical Artists’ Diane Bouchier Life-Time Achievement Award for Excellence in Botanical Art.

Land Acknowledgment
Vashon Island is the traditional homeland of the sx̌ʷəbabš (pronounced Schwa-ah-babsh) people, a once thriving Native community decimated by colonization. VCA is committed to stewarding this land, fostering creativity, and honoring indigenous culture through the arts.

We celebrate diversity in all aspects of the work we do and support an environment of inclusion, racial equity, and social justice in our programming and operations. We welcome all individuals to our campus and steward them with respect and dignity. We hold our patrons and all affiliates to the same standard: our home is a center for all, regardless of race, place of origin, sex, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, or class.
